Mike, gorgeous Chinook shots.

So Portugal flies Hips? Who knew. It always surprises me to see eastern-European aircraft in western service.

I believe that they are not actually operated by the fire dept there.   Much like the Erickson SkyCranes, they work under contract during the fire season.  Notice the Ukraninan reg and Russian (I think) danger sign on the tail rotor.

Today in the news there was a report of a hostage release in Columbia and there was a good photograph of the Red Cross MI 172 helicopter sent to retrieve the hostages. Here is the link to the image - the article was to political for inclusion on Fence Check to which to post a link.

I am seeing a few Mi-8/17s where I am at right now and have gotten close enough to get the registration off of 2 of the 4 I have seen, but I am having trouble with 1 of them. A black Mi-8/17 with "HK-4692" written on the underside. HK is Columbian, but it is supposed to be followed by ####A or another letter, not just the 4 numbers.  I am trying to figure out what it could be as I may not see them again.

Also, I was able to figure out one with the registration YA-KMM. Also have seen one from a distance and got a picture and it looks like YA-KMJ but I cant find YA-KMJ anywhere on the internet as a Mi-8/17.

anyone with some Russian helicopter knowledge please help...including you sovietjet!

I believe you may be talking about YA-KAJ operated by Kabul Air however I could not find photos of it.

yeah that must be it, thanks so much!

still cant figure out the mystery of the HK Mi-17 though. The best I got is that the other Columbian Air Force Mi-17s are all black and have an HK-#### registration rather than HK-#### with a letter at the end, like the normal Columbian registry should be.

wow yeah the nose looks different than any other Mi-8/17 I have seen. What is with that change? I love that color on the bird! I have seen a Mi-8 here that has russian registration and is blue in front, red in the middle, and a white tail. also a south african registered one that is yellow and blue. amazing colors.

question....why are some tail rotors/gear boxes on the left side and some on the right side?
