The changed nose houses additional avionics. The specific version in the photo is a civilian version of the Mi-17V-5 if I'm not mistaken. About your other question, all Mi-8s have a tail rotor on the right side(if you're facing forward). The Mi-17s have it on the left. This change was made to increase the helicopter's crosswind controllability(from a pushing tail rotor to a pulling one). What makes things more confusing is that in Russia the Mi-17 is referred to as the Mi-8MTV...

thanks for the explanation. Yeah I have seen Mi-8MTV written on the sides of some of the ones here. Since being here I have seen almost 50 different Mi-8/17s. Its pretty cool to see so much of a new aircraft. Except when they start flying so early in the morning that it wakes you up before you want to get up, them flying right over where you sleep lol

and I finally figured out the mystery of the "HK" birds. Columbian aviation helos run by a private company Vertical de Aviacion out of that country. not sure what they do at all, but here is a trio of pics of one.
