If you need another reason to visit San Diego...the USS Midway is now moored at the harbor front and will be opening as a museum this spring.

I shot this from a work helicopter when she was still docked at North Island NAS.

Great photo.  I would like to visit it.  I have different memories.  The attached photo was taken on Yankee Station from my destroyer during refueling from the Midway.

Nice photo Lin.  When was it taken?

[edit] ... just did some research on the therm "Yankee Station" ... Here's what I found...

Yankee Station was a point in the Gulf of Tonkin off the coast of Vietnam used by US Navy aircraft carriers to launch raids in the Vietnam War.

The name derived from it being the geographic reference point "Y", pronounced "Yankee" in the NATO phonetic alphabet. It was located 160 km (100 mi) from the coast, at 16° N latitude and 110° E longitude.

Normally there were three carriers at the station, each conducting air operations for twelve hours, then off for twelve hours. One of the carriers would operate from noon to midnight, another from midnight to noon, and one during daylight hours, which gave 24-hour coverage plus additional effort during daylight hours, when sorties were most effective.

Sorry about the reference to Yankee Station.  I tend to forget that not everyone was in the Navy during that time.  FYI there was also a Dixie station for South Vietnam.  Picture was taken in 1965 or 1966.

As I've noticed before, Fencecheck sure makes it a small world. I have one of the largest USS Midway sites online and have had some great photos from both Lin and Tony on my site for a couple of years:

Lin:

Tony:

I was stationed aboard USS Midway from January 1989 through August 1991 and have visited Midway three times in her new life as a museum in San Diego. A photo from my latest trip in March 2005 is shown below. The other 3,444 photos Shocked I've taken of Midway through the years can be seen at:

Just visited at the beginning of the month and it was great to see the new additions.

The Vigilante rocks, not just this one, but in general.

This was a really interesting way to spend a morning, and you could easily make a day of it...

Most of the ship is self-guided, but the island (Pri Fly, the bridge, etc) has some really interesting docents handling the tours.

Cruising past the bow on the tour boat really brings home just how large the ship is...

Nice stuff showing off my neck of the woods!  At least you got some of the nice weather.  A bit dreary at the moment.

Are those manicans in the F-4?  If so, that's kinda cool.
